Benchmarking Reports for Small to Medium Museums and Galleries in New South Wales

These Benchmarking Reports have been developed as part of the 2022 Museums & Galleries of NSW Sector Census, offering valuable insights into the operations of small to medium sized museums and galleries across the state.

We are committed to conducting regular research to provide an up-to-date understanding of the sector’s performance and challenges. These reports aim to assist small to medium galleries and museums with salaried staff in comparing their operations with similar organisations, empowering them to make informed decisions and assisting with their advocacy.

2024 Benchmarking for small to medium galleries
This report draws on data from 41 medium sized public galleries, with Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) staff ranging from 1.4 to 14.0. The galleries included represent both local government and university sectors, providing an overview of this segment of the regional and metropolitan gallery sector.

The museum benchmarking report is based on data from 38 medium sized public museums, with FTE staff ranging from 0.8 to 30.0. These organisations also span the local government and university sectors, offering a snapshot of their operational dynamics.
