Working at the State Correctional Museum
Located in Cooma, the State Correctional Museum preserves and presents the rich history of NSW Corrections, featuring exhibits, artefacts, and stories from the convict era to the modern correctional system. As a Museum Officer, you will play a vital role in sharing this history with visitors, maintaining exhibits, and ensuring a positive visitor experience.
Your role
As a Museum Officer, you will provide front-of-house services, conduct guided tours, support museum operations, and deliver events that engage and educate visitors. You will work closely with museum management, correctional staff, and inmates involved in museum operations, ensuring the site remains safe, accessible, and well-maintained.
What you’ll do
In this role, you will:
- Enhance visitor experience by welcoming guests, answering enquiries, and leading guided tours.
- Facilitate exhibitions, collections, and programs to engage a diverse audience, including school groups and special interest visitors.
- Support events, ceremonies, and functions, including setup, pack-down, and hosting dignitaries or VIP guests.
- Perform basic retail and administrative tasks, such as cash handling, stock monitoring, record-keeping, and visitor data collection.
- Ensure site safety and emergency management, including familiarity with security equipment and assisting in emergency evacuations.
- Assist with museum upkeep, including light cleaning, dusting exhibits, and general site maintenance.
- Work with correctional centre staff and inmates involved in museum operations, ensuring a respectful and professional working environment.
Essential Requirements
- Prepared to work the Museum’s standard days and hours (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm) and additional days when required.
- Ability to work extra days (approximately five additional weeks per year), including full-time attendance in some weeks.
- Professional appearance in business-casual attire, appropriate for meeting the public and representing CSNSW.
