Tim Ross on Design Nation

Tim Ross, comedian, broadcaster and well known architecture and design enthusiast has curated his first ever exhibition, Design Nation at the Powerhouse Museum as part of the Sydney Design Festival.

Design Nation celebrates the ingenuity of Australian design, showcasing Ross’ picks of Australia’s most iconic, everyday inventions from the Museum’s collection.

Many of these objects were mainstays in Australian households — the Dolphin torch, Staysharp knife and Esky. Tim invites us to rediscover these ubiquitous, everyday objects of Australian design as he reveals previously untold stories and design narratives through a series of audio interviews to show how our unique design histories have helped shape our national identity.

Tim’s inventive take on architecture and design has seen him win an AWGIE award for his ABC TV series Streets of Your Town and a National Trust Award for his acclaimed live show Man About the House, performed in architecturally significant houses across Australia. In 2016 he was asked to speak at the opening of the London Design Museum.

Tim will present curator talks on 9 and 10 March, where he examines the fascinating stories behind some the icons of Australian design.
