Sector Census 2026

Welcome to the 2026 NSW Museums & Galleries Sector Census.
What is the Census?
This Sector Census is a major research initiative conducted every four years to gather reliable sector-wide data on operations, collections, staffing, visitation, funding, facilities and organisational sustainability.
We understand that the demands on organisations are very high, and we have focused this year’s Census on the most pressing issues and the most useful information, aiming to keep the questions limited.
How will the data be used?
The data collected will be used to create a comprehensive snapshot of the sector, identify trends and measure change. It will help Museums & Galleries of NSW advocate for the sector, inform policy and program development, and provide government and other agencies with reliable evidence to support planning, funding and decision making.
What do I need to get started?
Most of the information required relates to your organisation’s operations during the last 12-month reporting period (whether that is a calendar year or financial year). We recommend you have the following information available to assist you with answering the questions:
- Annual Report
- Visitation statistics
- Exhibition program
- Details on your collection
- Details on staffing and volunteers
