Old Dubbo Gaol

Where History comes to life. Step inside the walls of our 19th century prison where visitors will wander at the heritage detail, and despair at the brutality of colonial prison life. Our Male Cell Division will draw you into the solitary walls where the sounds and stories leave you with a sense of loneliness for the most hardened of criminals. Enter the Gallows Gallery where an extensive collection of a Hangman’s kit overlooks corridors lined with charge sheets of the condemned, sure to make the hairs on your neck stand. If it’s fresh air you enjoy, attempt some hard labour in our Exercise Yards as the warders whistle blows for each change of drill.

Theatrical performances take place weekends and holiday periods. As a favourite for our visitors, these ‘Characters in Costumes’ bring an element of fun and personality into the harsh reality of prison life. Will you be a bystander, or collude with our prisoners and their daring escapes from the guards?
