Recently M&G NSW CEO Michael Rolfe visited Lismore to attend the opening of From Here to There: Australian Art and Walking at the Lismore Regional Gallery. The exhibition showcases leading Australian artists who incorporate the everyday act of walking in their art and was supported by a $40,000 Dobell Exhibition Grant, generously funded by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation and managed by M&G NSW.
“It was great to again be part of community wide excitement generated by Lismore’s new regional gallery…” said M&G NSW CEO Michael Rolfe. “Much of the energy on display that night was made possible by the Dobell Exhibition Grant and the new Lismore Regional Gallery shone as brightly as ever”.
Local curators Sharne Wolff and Jane Denison were commissioned to develop the exhibition based on a shared interest in walking and art and selected works either based on a visual reference to the act of walking, or an artwork produced as the result of walking.
The exhibition features work by Lauren Brincat, Dean Brown, Daniel Crooks, Nici Cumpston, Rebecca Gallo, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Alex Karaconji, Noel McKenna, Sarah Mosca, Nell, Liam O’Brien and Sarah Rodigari. Alongside runs an innovative public and education program creatively engaging both artists and the community in activities involving both art and walking and even sessions at the local pub!
There was a big turn-out on a cold winter’s night at the newly developed Lismore Regional Gallery for the opening address from Daniel Mudie Cunningham, Senior Curator, Visual Arts at Carriageworks followed by supportive words from Michelle Belgiorno on behalf of the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation. Michelle Belgiorno recounts that “it was great to see Dobell Foundation funds supporting the careers of 12 young and mid-career artists from around Australia. The exhibition and the public programming created a number of opportunities for the artists to exchange ideas about their practice with the community of Lismore and with each other. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”
The funding indeed allowed the exhibition to expand to include more works of greater scale and the commissioning of new works by Rebecca Gallo, who has undertaking a series of walks in and around Lismore, collecting discarded objects and transforming them into a sculptural installations in the exhibition and Sarah Rodigari who showcased a new performance on opening night as a result of her residency about how place is historically determined, invented and retold. The exhibition is also accompanied by a catalogue documenting the exhibition with beautiful thoughts and ideas from each artist reflecting on the act of walking and its meaning to them and in their work.
From Here to There: Australian Art and Walking is on until the 26th August 2018.
