Sydney Tramway Museum
Celebrating 60 years of Tramcar operations and 75 years of Tramway Preservation.
South Pacific Electric Railway Co-Operative Society Limited (SPER), under the trading name ‘Sydney Tramway Museum’ (STM), restores and operates heritage tramway rolling stock to provide a tourist attraction for people visiting the Sutherland Shire of New South Wales at our Loftus Museum. The Museum complex is located on the corner of Pitt St and Rawson Ave, Loftus, adjacent to the Loftus Railway Station.
STM aims to provide tourists with a heritage tram travel experience.
Trams are totally staffed by STM volunteers. Qualified and experienced staff provide tram services, which operate towards Sutherland (North) and south along the old railway line to Royal National Park Station. Special events, including Sydney Tramway Festival and Trams After Dark are highlights throughout the year. The Display Hall houses up to 35 trams from Sydney, interstate and overseas, as well as photographic and historical displays. The collection boasts the oldest operational electric tram in the world. Our picnic area, adjacent to the former Sydney Railway Square shelter, offers a space for enjoying morning tea or using our free electric BBQs at lunchtime. Other facilities include a kiosk, souvenir shop and mobility access platform.
A recently restored tramcar (D117) won the National Trust Award 2024 for Objects. Other tramcars are also being restored as funds become available.
