On the road – Regional Collections Digitisation Project

Museums & Galleries of NSW will soon be visiting a number of regional areas to discuss a proposed regional collection digitisation program and demonstrate the Collections and Stories prototype website.

In 2018 M&G NSW partnered with Create Infrastructure NSW and seven Local Government Authorities to develop a prototype website to profile and promote regional-based museum, gallery, Aboriginal cultural centres and keeping place collections. Called Collections and Stories, the prototype was developed to inform the planning and costing of a whole-of-sector approach to fund and digitise cultural collections that are held regionally throughout NSW.

How a state-wide digitisation program would be rolled-out across the regions is being considered as part of the current business case assessment process. Among the options considered is the establishment of regional digitisation hubs, with equipment, space and staff to undertake the work of documenting, assessing and digitising locally-held collections. This includes collections managed by both paid and volunteer organisations.

M&G NSW’s Collections and Stories Project Manager, Kate Gahan, will be discussing the regional collection digitisation program and demonstrating the Collections and Stories prototype website at the following locations.
