Destination Sydney

In a unique collaboration, three major Sydney independent public galleries, Manly Art Gallery, Mosman Art Gallery and the National Trust’s S. H. Ervin Gallery have staged the blockbuster show of the summer. Titled Destination Sydney, the exhibition showcased work that responds to the theme of Sydney as a destination for creative endeavours.

Working in partnership with curator Lou Klepac the galleries were able to secure the loan of iconic artworks by nine major Australian artists, drawn from major public and private collections.  Each gallery featured the work of three significant artists ranging from Brett Whiteley to Grace Cossington Smith and John Olsen.

The genesis of this collaborative exhibition came from a desire by the three galleries to work together on a scale they could not otherwise achieve. From Manly to Mosman and to Observatory Hill in the Rocks this exhibition connected across the harbour.

The exhibition drew enormous crowds across all venues, in some cases visitor numbers tripled and retails sales increased tenfold. Want to find out how they did it? We did too.

We ventured around the harbour to talk to the people behind the exhibition. In these interviews we attempt to find out why this collaboration has been such a success, so that others might follow their lead.
