Volunteer Museums: Engagement with Aboriginal Cultural Heritage

Volunteer Museums: Engagement with Aboriginal Cultural Heritage

This program is delivered on Country at Aboriginal Cultural Centres, offering a unique opportunity to learn within culturally significant places and contexts.

Developed by Aboriginal Culture, Heritage & Arts Association (ACHAA) in partnership with Museums & Galleries NSW, this one-day training program supports museums to work respectfully, confidently and ethically with Aboriginal cultural heritage, collections and communities.

Created in direct response to sector consultation, this free program recognises the challenges faced by volunteer-run and regional museums, while providing practical, accessible guidance. Participants will gain clear tools, expert insights, and achievable pathways to best practice.

The program will be focused on supporting participants to:

  • build confidence in engaging with Aboriginal communities
  • strengthen understanding of cultural protocols and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP)
  • learn practical approaches to interpreting and caring for collections in culturally respectful ways

Grounded in real-world museum contexts, this program aims to equip participants to reduce risk, access trusted resources and implement meaningful improvements within their organisations.

We are mindful of the current uncertainty around fuel supply and will keep registered participants informed should it become necessary to move the program online. We are also exploring the possibility of recording one or both panel sessions on audio and will keep Chapters updated.
