We Farewell Kate Gahan and Celebrate her Storyplace Legacy

Kate Gahan, Storyplace launch, held in the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame at Tamworth, 2022.

Museums & Galleries of NSW farewells Kate Gahan, whose vision, leadership and dedication have been central to the creation and evolution of Storyplace.

From its earliest conception, Kate played a pivotal role in shaping Storyplace into a unique and dynamic website that brings the rich histories of regional New South Wales to life. Drawing on digitised objects from the collections of regional museums, galleries and Aboriginal Cultural centres, Storyplace has become a living archive, that captures diverse voices and stories, from communities across the state.

Kate’s work has not only resulted in a widely respected online resource but has also strengthened the sector more broadly. By championing collaboration between institutions, volunteers, and communities, she has helped unlock the potential of regional collections and demonstrated their relevance to contemporary audiences.

A key extension of this vision has been the Storyplace Roadshow, developed by Kate to build skills and capacity across the sector. Through hands-on workshops focused on collection care, research, documentation and digitisation, the Roadshow has empowered organisations to contribute to and benefit from Storyplace. Its next phase will see stories aligned with the NSW school curriculum, further embedding the platform as a valuable educational resource for teachers and students.

As Museums & Galleries of NSW looks to the future, Storyplace will continue to grow and evolve, guided by the strong foundations Kate has established

Kate will continue working as an advisor in the Museums & Galleries of NSW’s Museum Advisors program.

We thank Kate for her outstanding work and wish her all the best in her next chapter.
