The Sutherland Shire Historical Society & Museum is located at 88 Venetia Street (cnr Holt Rd), Sylvania. NSW.
Sutherland Shire Historical Society, founded in 1966, is a community group interested in preserving and raising awareness of the Sutherland Shire’s local history – from First Nations people occupation to the arrival of James Cook and colonial settlement up to present day.
The story of Sutherland Shire’s heritage is told in various ways:
• Collecting artefacts for display in the Society’s Museum.
• Researching and publishing histories for our quarterly Bulletin, our website and other publications.
• Work to help preserve the Shire’s natural and built heritage.
• Facilitate booked visits to the Museum by various groups:
Snapshot Tour for community groups.
Self-guided Resource Pack for primary schools.
Mini Explorers’ Museum program for preschools and under 5s.
Museum Highlights include the Matson Collection of Dharawal stone and bone artefacts, Indigenous full size bark canoe replica, authentic ballast from the HMS Endeavour, extensive items tracing 20th century Shire history and 1920s horse drawn cart as well as a number of other unique outside artefacts.
