    Outside the Newcastle Maritime Centre

We have incorporated the workings of the port in telling the role that seafarers, shipping and the sea have played since 1804

Explore the rich maritime history of Newcastle and the Hunter River, and learn about the port's importance to the development of Australia from the early daysof European settlement to the present time.

We are located in the beautifully restored 1910 heritage harbour front wharf building.  We will transport you via a series of interactive exhibits into the story of our harbour, the people and the events associated with it.

You will see some of the world's largest vessels guided bytugs on their way to load and idscharge their cargoes. Enjoy the sturdy timber fishing trawlers rturning with their catch, a picturesque parage of yachts and pleasure craft entering and leaving the port on their way to and from their destinations.

Newcastle: So Hot Right Now

See why Newcastle was on Lonely Planet’s list of hottest cities ...

Museums & Galleries of NSW helps small-medium museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural centres create exciting experiences for visitors and, through this, thriving local NSW communities. We don't run museums, galleries and cultural centres but we care about those who do. We develop their skills, connect them with others in the industry, provide funding, point visitors their way, and give them access to ground-breaking exhibitions.

Museums & Galleries of NSW is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
