Lewers: Penrith Regional Gallery

Set on the banks of the Nepean River at the foot of the Blue Mountains, Lewers: Penrith Regional Gallery was established in 1981 for the people of Penrith. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the former home and gardens of celebrated artists Gerald and Margo Lewers, and to enjoy outstanding exhibitions, special events, and hands-on classes and workshops for all ages.

The Gallery presents a varied annual exhibition program with a focus on Western Sydney, First Nations practices and nurturing emerging artists. It has worked in partnership with the Art Gallery of NSW and as a Biennale of Sydney presenting partner.

Historically, Gerald and Margo Lewers – two leading artists in the development of Australian modernism – bought the riverside property in the 1940s, and in the 1950s made it their permanent home and studio. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the Lewers’ home, with its beautiful gardens, architecture, artworks and creative environment, was known as a place of style, innovation and hospitality.

As author Patrick White wrote about spending time with the Lewers: “ideas hurtled, argument flared, voices shouted, sparks flew … the house provides one of the focus points of our still tentative civilisation.”

The Gallery has original works by the Lewers on permanent display, including sculptures by Gerald and mosaics by Margo.
