Local Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung artist Tori Ann Donnelly’s debut solo exhibition Balawun.ga invites us to gently peel back the layers of Gumbaynggirr history.

This exhibition is grounded in respect for culture and reinforces the core values of storytelling on Country. Tori Ann explores the use of the plant kin, as a teacher, a living entity whose roots, limbs, bark, branches, leaves and flowers are sacred knowledge holders. The ancient melaleuca tree was etched into Country when Gumbaynggirr history first began. During this historical time of creation, the stories teach it was when Gumbaynggirr language was new to being spoken on Country. Balawun.ga – the paperbark tea tree was created under powerful circumstances yet despite this the tree offered vital resources for Country, animal kin and the Gumbaynggirr people. This sacred tree continues to carry ancient stories from the past into the present whilst the tradition of storytelling will continue being passed on from one generation to the next.

The special exhibition invites us to slow down, listen and learn about the delicate layers of this strong tree. Tori is a core, valued member of the Yarra’ team and 2026 marks a decade of her formal art practice. This achievement has been solidified with completing a Diploma of Visual Arts; garnering a Regional Arts NSW-funded professional mentorship with the acclaimed Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens; a nomination in the esteemed Aunty Grace Roberts Awards for Arts & Culture and a prestigious artist residency at Bundanon.
