More than 140 projects across New South Wales will share in $8.65 million in funding under the 2025–27 NSW Heritage Grants Program, which aims to support the conservation, restoration, and activation of significant heritage sites.
This round marks an increase of $2.65 million from the previous cycle, with funding distributed across three key streams: Caring for State Heritage, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage, and Local Government Heritage grants.
A majority of the projects—103 of the 140—are located in regional NSW, with 37 in the Sydney metropolitan area. The broad spread of funding reflects a continued focus on improving community access to and engagement with heritage throughout the state.
Two large-scale projects received $1 million each under the Activating State Heritage category, the largest single grants in the program’s history. These will support the revitalisation of Newcastle’s heritage-listed Post Office and the Victoria Theatre, both long-closed sites set to reopen for public use.
Other funded projects span a range of heritage places, including museums, town halls, churches, parks, and cemeteries. Among them are the Bushranger Hotel in Goulburn, North Beach Kiosk in Wollongong, Maitland Town Hall, and Sydney’s History House. The iconic Toganmain Woolshed—believed to be the largest of its kind remaining in the Riverina—will also undergo restoration works, preserving its historical features such as the shearers’ quarters and original chimneys.
Support for Aboriginal cultural heritage totals just under $200,000, with funding directed to important Aboriginal Places including Brungle Cemetery, St Clair Mission Church School, Cooroboree Ground, and Birubi Point. At Birubi Point Aboriginal Place, upgrades to the seating and viewing area will help protect culturally sensitive spaces while improving visitor access.
Additionally, 89 local councils will each receive $25,000 through the Local Government Heritage stream, supporting efforts to identify and protect locally significant places and stories.
