Profile

My name is Dr Fiona Starr, and through Australian Lived Histories, I research, curate and share fascinating stories about people from the past, working with historical objects, archaeological artefacts, documents, buildings and places.

I am an historian, archaeologist, curator and editor, and have worked for over 20 years with numerous small, medium and large museum and heritage organisations around Australia.

I provide historical research and engaging storytelling-writing as well as curatorial services such as exhibition development; text-writing for websites, print publications and interpretive signage; museum/historic site tour and education program writing; significance assessments and collections management.

I have published widely and have a BA (Hons) in Australian Archaeology, a Master of Arts (with merit) in Museum Studies and a PhD in Heritage Conservation. I also work with the History Teachers’ Association of NSW as a Professional Support Officer and as Editor of the quarterly professional journal ‘Teaching History’.

Projects
  • Storyteller – storyplace.org.au: researching and writing over 200 engaging stories about regional museum objects (2022-2024).
  • Female convicts research – Museums of History NSW: identifying, researching and writing biographies of 20 female convicts from the Female Factory, Parramatta (Aug-Nov 2022).
  • Curatorial team, Hyde Park Barracks Museum renewal project: historical research, exhibition development, collection curation, website and audioguide content development (2019-2020)
  • Curator of Hyde Park Barracks Museum and The Mint for Sydney Living Museums (now Museums of History NSW) (2012-2020)
  • House Historian: historical research and compiling books for private owners of historic houses and properties in Sydney and Melbourne (2020-2023).
