Heritage Asset Officer
Be part of a growing and passionate team dedicated to delivering unforgettable heritage transport experiences, preserving NSW’s priceless transport heritage, and supporting local community groups across our unique sector. Together, we’re bringing transport heritage to life! — and we’d love you to join us on the journey.
About Us
Transport Heritage NSW (THNSW) is a not-for-profit, registered charity, including a passionate members and volunteer base. THNSW operates the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere and the Blue Mountains Locomotive Depot at Valley Heights, while also delivering vibrant heritage rail journeys and transport events across NSW. We also proudly support other local community-based and volunteer heritage transport sector groups regionally and throughout NSW and the ACT.
About the Role
Are you passionate about heritage asset management and ready to make a tangible impact across NSW’s rail heritage sites? Join THNSW as a Heritage Asset Officer and help care for and preserve some of the state’s most significant transport heritage places.
In this hands-on and collaborative role, you’ll coordinate heritage asset management activities, implement built heritage maintenance and conservation plans, and engage with a broad network of stakeholders — from internal SMEs and government agencies to passionate volunteers and custodial groups. Whether it’s working with historic precincts, developing costed project proposals or updating conservation registers, every day offers a unique opportunity to protect and enhance our shared heritage.
Based in Thirlmere and/or Sydney, with travel across NSW, and the opportunity for hybrid working, this 12-month fixed term contract role (full-time or part-time, we’re flexible) is ideal for someone with strong project and stakeholder management skills, a practical mindset, experience in asset and/or property and facilities management, and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage. If you’re a self-starter who loves to work independently as well as part of team, with initiative, attention to detail, and a “can-do” attitude, we’d love to hear from you.
About You
You’re a motivated and practical professional with a passion for heritage places and a strong sense of initiative. You thrive in collaborative environments but are equally comfortable working independently, juggling multiple projects, and adapting to changing priorities. Your attention to detail, strong communication skills, and ability to coordinate people, problem solve and deliver projects on time, on budget and on quality make you a reliable and trusted team member.
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:
• Relevant asset management experience in either heritage place management OR property and facilities management — ideally across dispersed sites and heritage-listed or complex environments
• Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline
• Strong project planning and coordination skills, including scoping, contractor management and regulatory approvals.
• Confidence working with a wide range of stakeholders — coupled with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Membership of Australia ICOMOS or another relevant heritage body is not essential but would be an advantage.
Above all, you’re a team player who values collaboration and integrity and who loves working hands-on and bringing projects to life.
