Director
The Director of Canberra Contemporary is a dynamic, inclusive, and entrepreneurial leader responsible for shaping and delivering the organisation’s vision to connect Kamberri/Canberra’s communities with audiences locally and nationally. As one of Australia’s longest running membership-based contemporary visual arts organisations, Canberra Contemporary is at a strong point artistically, financially, and collaboratively, with a vision to embed contemporary culture at the heart of everyday life in the nation’s capital. Reporting to the Chair, the Director is both the executive and artistic leader of Canberra Contemporary, overseeing strategic and financial leadership, artistic programming, stakeholder engagement, and brand development. They lead a dedicated part-time team of professionals, fostering collaboration and professional growth while delivering innovative programs that engage artists, audiences, and partners. Looking ahead, the Director will play a key role in preparing Canberra Contemporary for its expansion into the new Kingston Arts Precinct in the next 3–4 years.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in arts leadership, with expertise in financial and program management, curating, funding, sponsorship/philanthropy, and community partnerships. A strong advocate for contemporary visual arts and Canberra Contemporary, the Director will bring a deep knowledge of Australia’s visual arts sector and a proven ability to build confident teams, develop strategic partnerships, and drive organisational success.
