Queering the Museum

Designed for museum professionals, arts workers, public historians, and artists this workshop develops practical strategies to increase LGBTIQ+ visibility in museums and galleries and through creative practice.

It is widely recognised that museums and other cultural institutions have historically excluded certain groups. Social inclusion sets out to counter this. However, if inclusion strategies are to be effective, they need to go beyond simply inviting in those who have been excluded. What is required is an understanding of the realities of structural injustices, and a commitment to affirmative and transformative remedies. ‘Queering’ as a critical practice is one such transformative remedy that can support museums, galleries, and practitioners to design new ways of doing diversity.

In this workshop we will analyse and evaluate case studies from our own practice, lead participatory activities, and facilitate group discussions designed to assist participants to identify challenges and opportunities in their own practice, and develop practical approaches to LGBTIQ+ inclusion and queering the museum.

We encourage participants to bring their own experiences of practice to the discussions including current projects.
