Cowra and District Historical Museum

The Cowra and District Historical Museum preserves and displays history from around the region.

Images of Cowra Prisoners of War Camp and the famous 1944 breakout are represented in the Museum’s collection. 545 Japanese prisoners of war escaped from the Cowra camp–one of the largest prison escapes of World War II, as well as one of the bloodiest. Four Australian soldiers and 231 Japanese soldiers were killed.

Some images of Cowra in its pioneer days from the late 1880s have survived and are believed not to be held by any other institution or organisation.
