Cringila Centre Museum

Cringila Centre Museum tells the story of the Maltese immigrants arriving in Australia in the early 50’s post WW2.

The Museum started with the first huge Mural placed in the front of the building around eleven years ago to showcase assimilation by painting the Wollongong harbor and the Malta harbor showing the Maltese families arriving in Cringila to start a new life in another country.

The painting is a story and the many visiting Cringila tell us the painting is quite unique. The Mural was hanged outside during the 65th year anniversary and that’s when we decided to commission a Migration Statue made out of steel. This Steel Monument is at the entrance of the building and shows a typical family in the 50’s the Father with a luggage, Mother and mostly first-born child in Malta.

The people could only travel by ship, so we build the face of a ship with the anchor showcase the famous Maltese cross.

As time evolved we commissioned more expensive Murals to fill the inside of the hall and the walls now surrounded showcasing places of interest in Malta. We also commissioned a stain glass window that lights up showing a typical town in Malta. One will also find full replica of two Knights of Malta, where many kids are fascinated when seeing them for the first time.

In conclusion at the end of the tour one can visit the Anzac Memorial located at the back of the property, remembering the Maltese Immigrants that fought and died during WW1 with the Australian Army. We hope that when at the Museum of Art in Cringila you will gain an understanding of Malta a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean.
