Of the 58 original paintings on display as part of the annual Cowra Regional Art Gallery exhibition, Queensland artist Naomi White last week walked away with the 2014 Calleen Art Award for her work End of Day.
Michael Rolfe, CEO of Museums and Galleries of NSW, presented the painter with her $18,000 prize at the gala opening event on Saturday 3 May. Rolfe said of the landscape painting, “it’s a wonderful work where White’s use of intuitive brush strokes and discreet tonal gestures, achieves a sharp and focused work.”
The $2000 Central West Regional Art Award was awarded to Genevieve Carroll for her work Over the Table Blue Dandelions. One of a series of works documenting the artist’s visual memories, this piece “is a well-constructed narrative imbued with light and life” said Rolfe.
...it’s a wonderful work where White’s use of intuitive brush strokes and discreet tonal gestures, achieves a sharp and focused work.
The must-see exhibition is at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery until June 15.
The Callen Art Award is an acquisitive one, and White’s work will join a growing collection showcasing some of our best Australian painters.
