Bangalow Heritage House Museum
Step through the six rooms and corridors of Heritage House to explore displays revealing our past. Find maps, objects and images recording the history and “past lives” of the local 2479 community. Popular with locals wanting to discover more about the house they live in or the community they’ve moved into, there’s a library of reference books, photographs, magazines and newspapers, tracing the history of Bangalow and the Byron Shire.
We have artifacts donated by families of local residents, dating back to the early colonial settlement in the late 1800s, and displays and short films revealing what existed here in the days when the Big Scrub rainforest had not yet been touched by the 19th century cedar-getters.
Even the building itself has a colourful history. After falling into debt and being bought by the Byron Shire Council, the Queenslander-style former brothel building was relocated to the site 30 years ago. Since then, it has been expanded to accommodate our growing collections and activities.
One successful 2025 exhibition provided an insight into a time before white settlement. Local traditional custodian, Delta Kay, loaned the museum a collection of artifacts from the Bundjalung and Arakwal people of Byron Bay – including coolamons, emu eggs, possum skins and woven baskets. A short film of the exhibition screens regularly.
We hold book launches, screen films, stage art and craft shows, using the verandahs and well-kept gardens bordering on popular 2.67ha Piccabeen Park, and provide a community hub, with space rented by many local community groups.
