Watt Space

Watt Space, The University of Newcastle Students’ Art Gallery, is located in Auckland Street in the Newcastle CBD. Located in the loading dock area of an art deco building once owned by The Electricity Commission, It has five distinct exhibition spaces. Its role is to provide professional development opportunities to students at UoN who aspire to careers as artists, designers, or professional arts administrators. During its life, over 10,000 students have utilised opportunities at the Gallery. Many acknowledge this experience as the springboard to establishing careers, nationally and internationally.

Watt Space is run by a Management Committee. The role of the Committee is to make decisions regarding the overall functioning and artistic direction of the gallery. The committee consists of three currently enrolled Fine Art students of University of Newcastle who are annually elected by the student body, three members of University of Newcastle staff from the School of Fine Art, and three members nominated by UoN Services Limited, the Gallery’s funding body,

The Gallery provides currently enrolled students of UoN with diverse opportunities;

to gain practical experience in exhibiting including the submission process, designing of invitations and press releases, exhibition installation and Gallery staffing; 

to gain practical experience in curating exhibitions;

to gain practical experience in gallery organisation and management;

to gain education in and an understanding of gallery practice, philosophy and policy.
