NSW Hall of Champions
The NSW Hall of Champions is a sport museum and hall of fame that honours the outstanding accomplishments of athletes who have excelled at the highest level in their chosen disciplines.
Located at the Quaycentre in Sydney Olympic Park, the museum showcases photographs and biographies celebrating the achievements of over 400 athletes across 59 different sports.
The Collection was started in 1978 by the then Minister for Sport, The Hon. (Ken) Kenneth Booth (1928-1988). Since 1979, an annual induction of athletes into the NSW Hall of Champions has contributed to the museum’s growing collection.
More recent champions to the Honour Roll include Ian Thorpe OAM, Mick Fanning AO, and Alex Blackwell. Champions elevated to Legend status are athletes who represent the greatest of the great in their field. Recent Legends include Layne Beachley AO and Paul Kelly. Athletes are approved for induction by the Minister for Sport following recommendations from the Hall of Champions Selection Committee and New South Wales peak sporting bodies.
The Collection is included on the NSW State Heritage Inventory, featuring over 2,000 artefacts from sporting greats such as Betty Cuthbert AC, Sir Donald Bradman, Dawn Fraser and Shane Gould. Nationally significant artefacts and memorabilia from Olympic and Commonwealth Games are also included in the Collection.
In addition to the permanent display in NSW Hall of Champions, temporary exhibitions showcasing the museum’s significant collection help bring our sporting heritage to life. These exhibitions are on display across venues at Sydney Olympic Park including the Quaycentre, Aquatic Centre, and Athletic Centre.
