King’s Birthday Honours Recognise Museum and Gallery Leaders in NSW

2025 Kings Birthday Honours

The 2025 King’s Birthday Honours have recognised several individuals from New South Wales for their exceptional contributions to the museums and galleries sector, arts, heritage, and community service.

Arts and Cultural Leadership
  • Anne Flanagan AM – Awarded Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the arts, particularly in the museums and galleries sector.
  • Terence Maloon OAM – Recognised for service to the museums and galleries sector. He served as Director of the Drill Hall Gallery (2014–2024) and was formerly Senior Curator at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Community Heritage and History
  • Kathleen Margaret Smith OAM – Honoured for service to history preservation. She is a volunteer at the Liverpool Regional Museum and Family History Centre.
  • Gillian Whan OAM – Recognised for service to the community of the St George region. She has held multiple roles within the Kogarah Historical Society, including President since 2020, and is Co-Caretaker of the Carss Cottage Museum.
  • Noel Dennis Backman OAM – Awarded for service to the community of Glenreagh, including his role as former Director of the Glenreagh Mountain Railway Museum.

These honours highlight the vital role of dedicated individuals in preserving and promoting Australia’s rich cultural heritage.
