Dr Jilda Andrews joins the M&G NSW Board of Directors

 Dr Jilda Andrews

Museums & Galleries of NSW is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Jilda Andrews to its Board.

Jilda is a Yuwaalaraay cultural practitioner, researcher and museum professional from north western NSW. Currently based in Canberra, her work is focused on cultural material held in museum collections – particularly historical material considered ‘ethnographic’ or collected for anthropological enquiry. Jilda has recently been appointed Deputy Director – First Nations at the National Museum of Australia – a newly created role aimed to cement First Nations leadership within the Museum’s Executive.

Jilda’s leadership has been recognised in her appointment by the British Council and Australia Council for the Arts’ Accelerate Program alongside her research and advocacy work including: Visiting Fellow – Futurist in Residence, University of SA; Co-Chair, Advisory Council, Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, University of Virginia, USA; Research Associate, University of Hokkaido, Global Station for Indigenous Studies and Cultural Diversity and Visiting Faculty Member for the Smithsonian’s Summer Institute of Museum Anthropology in Washington DC, USA.

M&G NSW Chair, Kylie Tung, states:

The Board is thrilled that Jilda will be joining us at a time of reinvigoration for the organisation. Her deep experience and enquiring mind will ensure M&G NSW continues to drive improvements for Aboriginal and First Nations cultural heritage in the state.’

Dr Andrews said:

‘The histories and experiences of the people of NSW are foundational to the Australian story. To be able to support the important cultural work of the state as a member of the Board for Museums & Galleries NSW – and alongside such a dynamic and committed team, is an honour.’

The Board also recognises the enormous impact of Phil Gordon, who’s term expired in April. The Board thanks him for his contribution, and in particular his support with the formation of the Aboriginal Culture, Heritage & Arts Association of NSW (ACHAA) into an independent Aboriginal-led organisation.
