Cultural experiences are the perfect accompaniment to the wines of the Hunter Valley region. A weekend escape to the Hunter offers no end of places to visit to pair culinary delights with rich history and delectable art.
Located two hours north of Sydney, Cessnock is the gateway to the vineyards in the Hunter Valley. At the centre of Cessnock is its Regional Gallery, a 'must see' for Wine Country tourists.
Northeast of Cessnock is another commercial centre, Maitland. Known for its unique heritage, the Maitland area consists of many cultural attractions such as the Maitland Gaol and Maitland Regional Gallery, now one of the most active and vibrant regional galleries in NSW. There are also numerous architectural marvels such as Brough House and Grossman House, which are the mirror image of each other.
The settlement of Morpeth, just outside of Maitland used to be a bustling river port. The town’s comparative isolation meant that its historic shopfronts andwharves have survived intact. Its also home to a great hidden gem: the Morpeth Museum. Do you remember “OAK” milkshakes, and Arnott’s biscuits? You can see how they started at the Morpeth Museum, along with other industries.
Finally treat yourself to a leisurely stroll around Tocal Homestead. This Georgian property is set amongst huge fig trees overlooking Tocal lagoon with the Paterson River just beyond. Alternatively, visit the equally pretty Sketchley Pioneer Museum situated next to the Hunter River.
There’s nothing like a day of culture hunting to get you in the mood for an evening of fine dining and sampling some of those fabulous Hunter Valley wines.
