Great Lakes to Manning

Before hitting Manning Valley make sure you visit Tuncurry and Forster, two towns nestled between Wallis Lake and the Tasman Sea sharing a close connection, a bridge built in 1959, special events and festivals and a rich history. In Tuncurry is the exquisite Great Lakes Museum that captures this heritage remarkably with volunteers happy to supply you with quantities of tea and coffee.

From Tuncurry, travel northalong the Great Pacific Highway to the Manning Valley area, visit beautiful coastal towns, white sand beaches or quaint inland villages with their bustling markets, museums and galleries.

Follow Manning River inland from the Pacific Highway and you’ll quickly find this major mid-north town Taree, situated just three and a half hours from Sydney. Taree is an excellent base for exploring the many attractions along the Manning River Valley but it has its own share of must see places for visitors. The Manning Regional Gallery delivers amazing exhibitions to the area and you will always see something different at the Gallery as they change exhibitions every 4 to 6 weeks.

Nearby Taree is Tinonee. A visit to this little historical village is not complete without dropping into Tinonee Museum located in Manchester Street, where you will find the town's original 'lock-up' on display.

A ten-minute drive west of Taree is the historic town of Wingham.  Settled in 1853 on the banks of the Manning River, Wingham offers visitors a step back in time. Its rich heritage evident in the many splendid National Trust listed Federation buildings, which surround the town common modelled on the English square.

Spend some time at the Wingham Museum. It's open 7 days and showcases a vast collection of interesting memorabilia, located in an historic building once used as a grocery and produce store (circa 1880).

Also in Wingham is Manning Valley Rock Hounds Lapidary Club Gem and Mineral Museum featuring gems, fossils and minerals collected from the local area, an ever increasing collection from around Australia, and a large hands-on display for beginners and school groups that covers everything from fossils and crystals to agates and zebra stone.

No trip in Manning Valleyis complete without driving from Wingham to Elands through the Coorabakh National Park to witness the natural highlight of the area: the Ellenborough Falls.

Museums & Galleries of NSW helps small-medium museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural centres create exciting experiences for visitors and, through this, thriving local NSW communities. We don't run museums, galleries and cultural centres but we care about those who do. We develop their skills, connect them with others in the industry, provide funding, point visitors their way, and give them access to ground-breaking exhibitions.

Museums & Galleries of NSW is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
