The Wiradjuri people, original inhabitants of the area named the region 'Wagga Wagga' meaning ‘the place of many crows'. But there’s more than crows here; Wagga Wagga on the Murrumbidgee River is a prosperous city of 60,000 people and one with a number of cultural surprises.
Situated in the heart of the city, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is an innovative public art gallery located in the architect-designed Civic Centre and home to the National Art Glass Collection. The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery hosts an exciting range of touring exhibitions as well as home-grown shows using the Gallery’s extensive collections and local artists.
Right next door, the Museum of the Riverina sits comfortably in the historic 1881 Council Chambers, providing diverse exhibitions throughout the year. Every visit presents something new; displays capture the spirit of Wagga or highlight our shared histories from around the state.
If that's not enough, the Museum of the Riverina has another site at the Botanic Gardens, only a kilometre away. Its permanent collection Kidzone, Kidztrack and the Wagga Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame focus on the people, places and events that give Wagga Wagga its unique character. This is an ideal spot for families, with regular school holiday events and a dedicated discovery and play space for children 5-12.
And don't forget to pop into the Wagga Wagga Railway Heritage Museum. Everyone from school children to rail enthusiasts will love the experience of Wagga's local rail history and its in easy within walking distance from both the Museum sites.
For those who love to clamber around big planes then a visit to the Wagga Wagga RAAF Heritage Centre is a must! Located in Forest Hill, approximately 10 kilometres east of Wagga Wagga, the heritage centre has indoor and outdoor displays of aircraft, memorabilia and photographs, and features a Canberra bomber, a Meteor jet, a Mirage and Sabre fighters on display.
