Trying to get your local story seen? Think ABC Open

ABC Open is a great project offering skill development, distribution and a context for your community project. It’s open to everyone who lives in regional Australia and invites communities to produce and publish photos, stories, videos, and sound through the ABC. Each project explores a different idea or theme and way of contributing: whether it’s photos or video, tracking local knowledge on a map or collaborating with other people or communities

At M&G NSW we are aware of a number of small and local museums that have taken advantage of this great program. Just because you don’t have technical and digital know-how yourself doesn’t exclude you from working with ABC Open. In fact, they have a nose for story and are committed to getting that story rendered in a way that will be inviting to all.

Just because you don't have technical and digital know-how yourself doesn't exclude you from working with ABC Open.

There’s no need to wait for ABC Open to knock on your door. It’s easy to be involved–ABC Open has 12 producers in NSW. Find a producer in your area and follow their posts to see how you can join in through workshops and other local events. You can see the projects they have done and get a feel for what’s involved in bringing your story alive on ABC Open.

Take a look at some of the terrific work Evans Head Living Museum or the Mullumbimby Museum has done with ABC Open, and then listen to this story of Aboriginal artist Narelle Urquhart, who uses her art to come to terms with the difficulties of being a child of the stolen generation.

You can also view the video on the ABC Open page and read more about the project.

What’s your story?
