Fellowship, Mentorship and Volunteer Placements

Listen to successful fellowship, mentorship and volunteer placement recipients from 2014 explain how valuable their profesional development experience was.

In this video:

Katrina Cashman,  Deputy Director, Mosman Art Gallery was awarded a fellowship at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Helen Johnson, Social History and Exhibitions Curator at Fairfield City Museum and Gallery was awarded a mentorship at the Immigration Museum, Melbourne.

Susan Davis, Wollondilly Heritage Centre was awarded a volunteer placement at the State Records of NSW.

Applications are now open for the 2015 Mentorship, Fellowship and Volunteer Placement Programs, providing professional development opportunities for all, whether you’re paid senior, mid-level or volunteer staff in a museum or gallery.

Fellowships offer senior staff from NSW museums and galleries the opportunity to undertake a placement at an international cultural organisation. This year there are two fellowships available, providing up to $6,000 each. Successful applicants can spend two weeks with the Dallas Museum of Art in the USA, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (NMMCA), Korea, or arrange a fellowship of their own choice.

In 2014 Katrina Cashman, Deputy Director, Mosman Art Gallery was awarded a fellowship at MMCA where she researched Korean contemporary art and artists for future residencies and exhibition opportunities at Mosman Art Gallery.

“The resulting fellowship was an amazing experience which more than lived up to my expectations, serving as essentially a crash course or an introduction into the depth and breadth of the Korean contemporary art scene.”

Mentorships are a valuable professional development opportunity for emerging and mid-level museum and gallery staff to spend two weeks with a state, national or smaller, more specialised organisation. Applicants can apply for a mentorship at the Australian Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), or arrange a placement of their own. In 2015, M&G NSW will offer four mentorships of up of $3,000 each.

Sally O’Neill, Education Officer at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery, was the recipient of a 2014 Mentorship at the MCA. During her placement she was exposed to many education/outreach programs, spent time investigating the organisation’s use of technology in education programs, while also establishing valuable new contacts.

“I believe meeting people in the arts and talking to them about their roles in the gallery is incredibly beneficial to both me and to the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery as it helps build a supportive network”

The Volunteer Placement Program is a great opportunity for anyone giving their time and expertise to a small or volunteer managed museum in NSW. Volunteers are placed in a cultural institution pre-arranged by M&G NSW, or in an organisation of their own choice. In 2015 up to four placements are available of up to $2,000 each.

Susan Davis from The Oaks Historical Society undertook a 2014 Volunteer Placement at the State Records of NSW. The placement enabled her to develop her skills in the areas of research, digitisation, preservation, documentation, and archiving.

“Staff were more than willing to share information and I have been able to compile quite a considerable folder of resources to use as a reference in the future.”

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to take part in this unique professional development experience.

Applications close 5pm, Wednesday 1 April 2015.
