Overview
The National Trust is the largest community based, not-for-profit conservation organisation in Australia, operating for more than 70 years. Our vision is to bring the heritage of New South Wales to life for future generations.
World Heritage listed Old Government House is the oldest surviving public building in Australia. Built by convicts, it became the decision-making centre of the colony and served as the ‘country residence’ for the first ten Governors of Australia. Today, it is operated as a historic house museum and is home to the National Trust’s colonial furniture collection, early textiles and significant home wares from the time of the Governors. Experiment Farm Cottage is the site of Australia’s first land grant and is named after the successful self-sufficiency experiment conducted there by James Ruse. It too is operated as a historic house museum and is dressed to reflect the mid-1830s.
We’re looking for an energetic team player with a track record of delivering high quality, visitor-centric customer service to work with our Duty Manager and wonderful team of volunteers in the delivery of the day-to-day operations of these two properties. Our aim is to create an experience for our visitors which is welcoming, engaging and enables them to get the most out of their visit.
About the Role
You will be busy assisting the Duty or Property Manager with the operation of the two properties including volunteer management, security and presentation of the properties, administrative tasks and oversight of retail and front of house duties, through to assisting with educational tours and public programs.
About you
We are looking for someone who is passionate about heritage buildings, history and education and just as passionate about working with our highly skilled volunteer workforce. You need to be organised, computer literate, great with people and happy to turn your hand to any number of tasks as required.
While we prefer you to have worked in a museum environment before, you must have a background or interest in history and education and ideally some understanding and appreciation of the conservation and management issues for historic sites and museums, hold a current driving license and be able to demonstrate competence in a number of computer based skills.
Additionally, if you have experience in cultural tourism, customer service or retail, we’d love to hear from you. We offer a flexible work environment and value the highest levels of professionalism.
You must have the right to live and work in Australia to apply for this job.
