Internship – Exhibitions


The Art Gallery of NSW is seeking interns for 2019. The Gallery’s internship program is focused on providing students with hands-on experience in an institutional setting. The offer is only available to current enrolled tertiary-level students for whom an internship is a course requirement.

The successful candidate will work with the Exhibitions team on the development and/or project management of two upcoming exhibitions: The essential Duchamp (opening April 2019) and Archibald 100 (2021). Other potential projects include the 2019 Archibald Prize regional tour.

Tasks include:
Working with the Manager, Exhibition Loans and Touring Exhibitions, and the Exhibitions Registrar to deliver a major touring show
Being part of the key planning and implementation team for a major exhibition
Liaising with other departments within the Gallery, such as curatorial, conservation, design, registration and installation, to support the project team
Assisting the Exhibitions team with loan correspondence and management with national and international collaborators

Educational outcomes:

Understanding the fundamentals of project managing major exhibitions in a leading art museum and working in project teams
Knowledge of art gallery practice in a state museum context, including – depending on exhibition – loan management; installation; use of collection management system
Depending on exhibition, experience in registration and management of major prize exhibition, or in planning for major touring or incoming loan exhibition

Details of offer and location

Note this is an unpaid internship for a up to 20 days in total coinciding with course requirements. If working on exhibition installation, attendance could be in a condensed period over 2 weeks, to be negotiated.

The successful candidate will be located on Gallery at the Domain site and may also be asked to travel to other Gallery facilities within the Sydney area for the purposes of accessing the Gallery’s collection.
