First Nations Lead Artist Educator
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The National Gallery of Australia prioritises the voices and perspectives of First Nations artists and communities through the National Collection, exhibitions program and national audience engagement initiatives. The First Nations Lead Artist Educator plays a key role, working closely with the Education Manager and Head of National Learning to lead the development and delivery of First Nations learning pedagogy and practice at the National Gallery, through programs and resources for students and teachers.
The First Nations Lead Artist Educator leads the development and delivery of onsite learning programs for students, including gallery-based experiences and studio-based art-making programs. They work closely with the Digital Learning and Education Managers to develop innovative digital excursion programs, connecting online with students across the country. Teacher professional learning forms a key part of the role, working with artists and the Learning Team to support a national audience of teachers to embed First Nations art, artists and perspectives within teaching and learning programs.
The First Nations Lead Artist Educator works collaboratively to guide and support the work of artist educators and learning facilitators within the learning team. The role provides important mentoring support for the casual First Nations Learning Facilitators in their work across program areas. The role also leads training opportunities for colleagues and supports ongoing professional learning within the team.
With a primary focus on student and teacher audiences, the First Nations Lead Artist Educator also works closely with program managers and convenors across the Learning Team to provide support and guidance around
First Nations learning, perspectives and content to inform program development across learning areas.
The First Nations Lead Artist Educator will also contribute to public programs, access programs and special events.
This position reports to the Education Manager. This position of First Nations Lead Artist Educator is an ongoing, part time role with the Learning team. The First Nations Lead Artist Educator is also supported by colleagues in the First Nations Engagement Team.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
Our ideal candidate will have an artistic, creative or cultural practice with a strong knowledge of First Nations learning methodologies and values and demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of learning programs relating to First Nations art and artists.
You have significant experience leading learning programs for students and teachers. Experience working with other audiences, including early childhood groups, children and young people, community groups, family audiences and people with disability or access requirements is also highly desirable.
You have also worked closely with First Nations artists, curators and community members in the development and delivery of learning programs. You have knowledge and understanding of consultation processes and experience in engaging internal and external stakeholders in program development within a Gallery or museum.
You will also have demonstrated leadership skills, with experience in providing advice and guidance to colleagues in relation to First Nations learning programs, content, and perspectives. You will also have experience guiding and mentoring junior colleagues and supporting the professional development of a team.
You will have tertiary qualifications or significant experience in a related field, such as the visual or creative arts, community or cultural development or education.
WHAT WILL YOU DO
In accordance with the APS 5 work level standards, you will have the following key responsibilities:
- Assist with the development and delivery of First Nations learning programs for students and teachers, including onsite gallery and studio-based programs, online digital excursions and teacher professional learning.
- Support the development of learning resources relating to First Nations art and artists, through creating content, reviewing content and providing advice and guidance to colleagues.
- Provide mentoring support to casual First Nations Learning Facilitators.
- Work with the Education Manager to support artist educators and learning facilitators to embed First Nations perspectives and content within all learning programs and support their professional development in relation to First Nations learning.
- Support the work of the broader learning team, providing advice and guidance in relation to First Nations learning, perspectives and content across audience areas, and participating in public programs and access programs as required.
- Work with the Education Manager to engage community members and other external stakeholders in the development of First Nations learning programs and frameworks.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the organisation, including the First Nations Engagement Team and First Nations curatorial team members.
