Casual Part-Time Assistant Registrar


Sullivan+Strumpf is one of Asia-Pacific’s leading contemporary art galleries, representing the most engaging Australian and international artists of our time. Founded in 2005 by co-directors Ursula Sullivan and Joanna Strumpf, Sullivan+Strumpf has spaces in Sydney and Singapore and represents established and emerging artists and artist estates from across the Asia-Pacific and East Asia.

Sullivan+Strumpf is looking for a part-time Assistant Registrar to join our Sydney gallery three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). The ideal candidate must have a minimum of 2 years gallery experience in art handling and registration. This position will support the day-to-day operations of the Registration team. The successful applicant will have practical knowledge and experience of handling and preparing artworks, in addition to impeccable, librarian like attention to detail and communication skills. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment within a small team, where there is room to grow.

Remuneration: $25 per hour + Superannuation

Essential Criteria

• A minimum of 2 years’ practical gallery experience in art handling
• Experience is using collection database systems. Sullivan+Strumpf uses Art Logic database
• Demonstrated high level administrative and computer skills
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Full driving license

Tasks and responsibilities of the position

Work closely with the Registrar and Exhibitions Manager to manage the day-to-day activity surrounding all artworks in the gallery to ensure their safety and care. This includes the handling of artworks and administrative duties including:

Artwork handling
• Assist with the preparation of artworks; Including wrapping, packing, labelling and measuring
• Assist with maintaining and tidying the gallery stockroom
• Conduct incoming and outgoing artwork condition reports when required
• Assist the Registrar and Exhibitions Manager with the physical movement of artworks around the gallery

Administrative duties
• Coordinate the production and framing of artworks
• Update and maintain the collection database with accuracy
• Liaise with freight agencies to coordinate the movement of artworks and outgoing/incoming deliveries
• Assist the Registrar with the completion of loan agreements and update the internal database accordingly
