New Italy Museum facing bushfire threat

We would like to pay tribute to the amazing work being done by the New Italy Museum who are bravely facing down the threat of the Myall Creek Road Bushfire. The museum has been under threat since Tuesday 12 November. With conditions worsening, an incredible group of 30 volunteers from New Italy Museum, SES members and locals sprang into action at the first opportunity to safely access the site. The team used cars, utes, a bus and even a horse float to pack up and move as much of the collection as possible to a storage facility offsite.

New Italy Museum is one of our Standards participants for 2019 and all of the volunteers have been doing an incredible job throughout the program. Two of M&G NSW’s reviewers had been scheduled to attend a final site visit on Monday 18 November, however, due to the fire situation this has been postponed, and we now look forward to visiting once the situation has settled.

Museums and Galleries of NSW would like to show their support for the bravery and determination of the volunteers of the New Italy Museum and everyone who came in to assist.

For more information on bushfire disaster planning and responses, please see our Bushfire resource.

If any other Museums, Galleries or Aboriginal Keeping Places are under bushfire threat, please contact us, we would be happy to provide whatever support we can.
