Peter White, a Gamilaroi Murri from Tamworth in north-west NSW, has forged a successful career within the creative and cultural heritage sector over the past eighteen years.
Armed with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Cultural Heritage Management, Peter started out at the Australian Museum as the Aboriginal Heritage Officer, developing and managing successful cultural development programs in partnership with Indigenous communities.
Central to this work was Peter’s passion for community cultural engagement. As part of the evolution of the Museum’s community outreach program, Peter assisted NSW Aboriginal communities in identifying and fulfilling their own cultural objectives by developing cultural centres and keeping places. As part of this effort, Peter developed the award winning Keeping Culture CDROM.
Meanwhile Peter also became a specialist in repatriation activities while at the Museum, leading the Australian Museum’s Return of Indigenous Property program.
In 2005, Peter then took up a new challenge as Indigenous Cultural Development Officer within the NSW Government’s Arts portfolio. This role afforded greater opportunities for Peter to work with Indigenous communities in the multi faceted Indigenous creative sector to identify and develop innovative strategic approaches to advance a flourishing and viable arts and cultural life for Indigenous artists and communities.
Peter continues to relish the challenge of identifying and developing creative initiatives to improve both the social and cultural landscape for Indigenous peoples.
