Telling It How It Is: Oral History for Museums

Collecting and showcasing oral histories can be pivotal for museums wishing to reflect the personal, intimate, human and social accounts of their community and past events. Oral histories investigate and record personal memories and mementos using equipment that is readily available in most homes.  Using mobile phones, digital or tape recorders, computers and even pen and paper, everyone can play their part in preserving our cultural heritage through the respectful telling of diverse and poignant stories.

In this half-day seminar, speakers will look at techniques for collecting oral history; simple methods of recording, understanding and archiving narrated memories, and how these memories are portrayed on virtual platforms and through online exhibitions.

When: Friday 23 November 2012, 1.00pm - 4.00pm

Where: Museums & Galleries NSW, 43-51 Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomoolloo

Cost:  $35 (one participant) and $80 (three participants)

MAKE A DAY OF IT: $60 (IMAGinE awards + Telling It How It Is)

A Day at the Museum: An event for regional curators

M&G NSW, in partnership with the Australian Museum and Regional Public Galleries NSW (RPG NSW), is delighted to present A Day at the Museum: An event for regional curators.

This event is specifically designed to showcase opportunities to regional gallery and museum curators, managers and directors on how to build collaborations around the Australian Museum collection. Delegates will be introduced to the Museum’s significant items, artefacts and areas of focus with an eye to developing curatorial and project ideas at their own institutions or in collaboration with other institutions.

RPG NSW has generously offered to cover the registration fees of RPG NSW member organisations (one per organisation).

Places are strictly limited so hurry to secure your place at this special event! While this event is available to all, preference will be given to regional gallery and museum curators, managers and directors.
