Museums & Galleries of NSW has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Korea’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA)!

This is a great opportunity which means both parties will work towards promoting and facilitating cooperation between the MMCA and galleries in NSW. We’ll be sharing information and creating professional exchange opportunities for those who work in the industry.

Michael Rolfe M&G’s CEO said that, the signing represents a wonderful opportunity for NSW Regional and Public galleries to connect with what’s happening in South Korea which is home to one of Asia’s most vibrant art scenes.

Chung Hyung-Min, MMCA’s Director, said all four of their branches – Gwacheon, which was established in 1986, Deoksugung which opened in 1998, the recently opened facility in Seoul and the soon-to- open Cheongju – are committed to enriching the first-hand cultural experience of the viewing public.

Boasting a superb natural landscape surrounding the site, MMCA Gwacheon is devoted to various genres of visual arts such as architecture, design, and craft. Located within a historical site, MMCA Deoksugung showcases modern art from Korea and overseas. In the heart of the city, MMCA Seoul focuses on introducing global contemporary art. With its up-to-date art storage facility, MMCA Cheongju will fulfil the museum’s primary duty to collect, preserve, study, exhibit, and educate.

Through its various locations, MMCA intends to function as a cultural platform that encourages communication and cross-pollination of contemporary art with other various disciplines of art, science, and humanities. MMCA’s foremost mission is to offer a culturally rewarding experience to its visitors.

Chung Hyung-Min said, “We will remain committed to this mission for many generations to come and look forward in no small way to supporting the work of Museums and Galleries of NSW”.

To start the ball rolling M&G is looking forward to assisting with any planned visits to Seoul; providing introductions and professional advice for contacts and programs.
