Naomi McCarthy, Manager Education, Penrith Regional Gallery & Lewers Bequest

Two-week Fellowship at the Dallas Museum of Art, USA

The DMA Fellowship placement focused on the Museum’s approach to research and programming related to visitor engagement and learning through the DMA Friends Program and the Centre for Creative Connections. Naomi is interested in developing skills to create interactive exhibitions, online education resources and youth development programs.

 

Toby Chapman, Assistant Curator, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art

Two-week Mentorship with ruangrupa, Indonesia 

ruangrupa is an artist-led collective based in Jakarta, Indonesia that specialise in research and artistic projects addressing the relationship between the individual, the built environment and media. This mentorship gave Toby an opportunity to extend his knowledge of exhibition and project development. Working with an engaged and responsive organisation he was able to enrich his curatorial skills, strengthen international relationships and initiate creative projects.

 

Emma Hill, Education and Public Programs Officer, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery

Two-week Mentorship with McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park

McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park is the premier Sculpture gallery in Australia, presenting engaging exhibitions and public programs including the biennial McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award for contemporary outdoor sculpture. Emma spent time with the education and exhibition teams developing her curatorial research skills and increasing her knowledge of exhibition design and education program development.

 

Jenny Alder, Archivist and Volunteer Coordinator, Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum

Volunteer Placement at State Records Authority of NSW 

With an understanding of the theory behind collection management this placement provided Jenny with practical skills experience in handling, digitizing and recording collection material. Jenny applied what she learned through engaging the volunteers at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum in developing a researchable collection database that can be used for education, research and public program activities and purposes.

 

The Programs

Funded by Arts NSW on behalf of the NSW Government, this program provides professional development opportunities for everybody, whether you’re paid senior or volunteer staff in a museum or gallery.

The Mentorship Program for early to mid-career paid staff. Applicants can apply to spend two weeks at one of M&G NSW’s pre-arranged placements; the Australian Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, or arrange their own placement.

The Fellowship Program for senior staff. In 2014, applicants can apply to spend two weeks with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea or to arrange a fellowship of their own choice.

The Volunteer Placement Program enables volunteers to spend time in a larger institution to improve their skills. M&G NSW’s pre-arranged placements include Albury LibraryMuseum, Australian Museum, Hurstville City Library Museum Gallery, McCrossins Mill Museum and Gallery, State Records of NSW and Sydney Living Museums.
