Joint Meeting of M&G NSW Reference Committees

29 / 09 / 2010

On Thursday 23 September 2010 M&G NSW hosted a joint meeting of representatives of the M&G NSW Board, the Volunteer Reference Committee, Museum Reference Committee and Visual Arts Reference committee with representatives from Museums Australia (NSW) and Regional Public Galleries NSW.

One of the outcomes of the Watts review of M&G NSW is the creation of a sector wide strategy. To start this process, M&G NSW have undertaken an extensive review of existing policies as well as consulting with our reference committees to create a briefing document for Arts NSW and the soon to be appointed consultant. The consultant will work with Arts NSW, M&G NSW and the wider sector to develop the sector strategy.

The focus of last week’s meeting was to discuss the identified key issues currently impacting the museum and gallery sector in NSW.

Participants were asked to discuss issues surrounding these topics in small rotating groups over the course of the afternoon. The ten issues identified in the briefing document are:

Community Engagement, Role of Government at all levels , Funding , Networks and Partnerships, Human Resources, NSW Aboriginal Culture , Access , Collections , Sustainable Development & Technology

The final discussion for the day led to identifying the five top issues as: Community Engagement, Role of Government at all levels, Funding, Collections  & Sustainable Development

However, it was clear from the discussion that all ten areas were still of importance and that a number of topics were significantly inter-related. Leading to a suggestion that several topics could be clustered together as follows:

·         Community Engagement, NSW Aboriginal Culture, Access

·         Sustainable Development, Human Resources, Technology, Networks and Partnerships

·         Role of Government at all levels, Networks and Partnerships

·         Collections, Technology,
