M&G NSW 2011 Mentorships and Fellowships Awarded

M&G NSW is pleased to announce that six staff from museums and galleries across NSW have been awarded mentorships and fellowships through this year’s program.
The 2011 successful applicants are:
Shannon Maguire, Assistant Curator, Sydney Jewish Museum
LGA: City of Sydney Amount: $5,000
Shannon is the 2011 recipient of the International Fellowship to Singapore where she will undertake a week’s placement with National Museum of Singapore and a further week with the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore. During her Fellowship, Shannon will focus on the museums’ exhibitions which utilise a range of engaging and interactive audiovisual oral history components, as well as new approaches to education and public programs. This will be of great benefit to the Sydney Jewish Museum which is considering options for the redevelopment of its Holocaust exhibitions which currently utilise Holocaust Survivor guides but will soon need to find alternative approaches to telling these stories.
Cheryl Farrell
Senior Collection and Gallery Assistant Maitland Regional Art Gallery
LGA: City of Sydney Amount: $2,340
Cheryl will be spending two weeks with the registration department of the Art Gallery of NSW looking at collection management, including caring for Indigenous collections, digitisation and software systems.
Lilian Yong, Assistant Registrar, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre
LGA: Liverpool City Council Amount: $2,500
Lilian will undertake a mentorship with the registration department of the National Gallery of Victoria, looking at collection management processes, in particular the use of Vernon, collection management system which is used by both organisations. The mentorship will provide Lilian with an opportunity to further develop the relationship between the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and the National Gallery of Victoria that started with a collaboration on the documentation of an installation of the 465 piece Nigel Helyer artwork Silent Forrest.
Julie Petersen, Exhibitions and Public Programs Co-ordinator, Mosman Art Gallery
LGA: Mosman Municipal Council Amount: $2,160
Julie’s mentorship with the National Gallery of Victoria is an opportunity to develop a collaborative partnership as groundwork for two upcoming exhibitions being developed by Mosman Art Gallery- the first focused on key Sirius Cove (Mosman) artists Streeton, Roberts and Conder (all strongly represented within the NGV’s collection) and the second focused o n Hilda Rix Nicholas and early to mid 20th century Mosman based artist also represented at the NGV.
Andrew Halyday,
Technical Officer, Exhibitions and Collections, Wagga Wagga Regional Gallery
LGA: Wagga Wagga City Council Amount: $2,500
Andrew will be undertaking a mentorship with the Museum of Contemporary Art focusing on the installation and maintenance of new media and hybrid art technologies, in anticipation of the development of a dedicated audiovisual gallery space and associated new media arts program at the Wagga Wagga Regional Gallery.
Samantha Sinnayah, Curator, George Hanna Memorial Museum
LGA: City of Botany Bay Council Amount: $2,500
Samantha aims to divide her mentorship between the Western Plains Cultural Centre, Dubbo and the National Museum of Australia. This will provide her with an opportunity to gain experience in a large regional cultural centre with museum and gallery facilities and Australia’s national museum. As Samantha is the sole staff member at the George Hanna Memorial Museum, the opportunity to develop ongoing relationships with staff in other cultural organisations will be invaluable for her ongoing professional development.
In total $17,000 will be provided to the successful mentorees and fellow to enable them to undertake these significant opportunities to further their professional development and build ongoing links between their organisations and key cultural institutions across Australian and internationally.
