Excessory is a curated group exhibition of contemporary Australian jewellery that explores the transformation of commonplace or ‘excess’ materials into objects of aesthetic, cultural and commercial value.
This is an exhibition for small exhibition spaces. It showcases innovative artists who push the boundaries of what is considered ‘wearable’ and challenges viewers to reconsider the role of jewellery and the production of value in the contemporary world. It includes unique, peculiar and innovative jewellery pieces, painstakingly created from such materials as paper, discarded household appliances, roadkill and disused window panes. The exhibition explores the methodology, materials and meaning behind the work of six emerging and established jewellery artists: Vernon Bowden, Jeanette James, Mark Vaarwerk, Emily Valentine, Zoe Veness and Rebecca Ward.
Excessory is a Museums & Galleries NSW touring exhibition curated by Sarah Samild.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body
